In the shop you see two duvets. Both are called "down duvets". Both look similar. The price differs by double. What really lies behind this difference — and is it worth paying more?
The answer is not straightforward, but it is worth understanding before you buy. Because a down duvet is one of those purchases where the difference between genuine quality and a cheap imitation does not become apparent in the shop, but after several months of use.
What down actually is
Before talking about quality, it is worth understanding what the word "down" means. Down consists of soft, three-dimensional structures found beneath the outer layer of feathers on geese or ducks. They are not feathers — feathers are flat and rigid. Down is airy, lightweight and exceptionally good at trapping air, which is the best natural insulator.
It is precisely this property — the ability to create air pockets — that explains why a genuine down duvet is so warm and yet so light.
Genuine down duvet versus imitation — what sets them apart
The down percentage
The first and most important difference — how much down is actually in the duvet. Reading the labels is essential here.
A genuine down duvet will have a stated composition, for example: "90% down, 10% feathers" or "85% down, 15% feathers". The higher the down percentage, the lighter, warmer and more expensive the duvet.
A cheaper imitation often has a composition such as: "30% down, 70% feathers" or even "5% down, 95% feathers". Technically it is still called a "down duvet" because it contains at least a little down — but in practice it is a feather duvet with a minimal amount of down.
Another variant — duvets in which synthetic down imitations are used instead of natural down. These are often called "down alternative" or "microdown" — and this is a completely different product from a genuine down duvet, even though the price may be similar.
Fill power — the thermal efficiency indicator
Fill power is an indicator measuring how much volume 30 grams of down occupies. The higher the figure, the better the down quality.
300–400 fill power — low quality down, most commonly used in cheap duvets. The duvet will be warm but heavy.
500–600 fill power — medium quality down. A good balance between price and quality.
700+ fill power — high quality down. The duvet will be light, warm and long-lasting. This is the figure you will find in truly high-quality down duvets.
Important to know: fill power indicates down quality but not the thickness or warmth of the duvet — that depends on the amount of down in the duvet, not just its quality.
The origin of the down
In high-quality down duvets the down usually comes from geese rather than ducks. Goose down is larger, airier and has a higher fill power. Duck down is smaller and slightly denser — it is also quality down, but usually with a lower fill power.
Geographic origin also matters. European down (particularly from Hungary, Poland or Scandinavia) is considered the quality standard. Birds in colder climates have thicker, airier down than birds in warmer climates.
The fill quantity
This is another factor that many people ignore. Two duvets with the same fill power can warm completely differently if one is filled with 300 grams of down and the other with 500 grams. In a high-quality duvet the exact fill weight is always stated.
The casing
A genuine down duvet has a special fabric — tightly woven but breathable, which prevents down from pushing through the fabric while allowing air to circulate. This fabric usually carries the designation "downproof".
In cheap duvets the casing is often a simple cotton or synthetic fabric — and down can push through it. This is easy to check: take the duvet and try to feel the down through the fabric — if the hand on the fabric feels down after a few minutes, the casing is poor quality.
How to identify a genuine down duvet in the shop
Read the label
This is the most important step. Look for:
- The ratio of down to feathers (the more down the better)
- The fill power figure (700+ is high quality)
- The origin of the down (goose down and geographic origin)
- The exact fill weight in grams
- The casing material
Feel the weight
A genuine high-quality down duvet is surprisingly light for its size. If the duvet looks thick and warm but is heavy — there are probably more feathers than down in it, or the fill power is low.
Press and release
Take the duvet and squeeze it. If it quickly regains its shape and "puffs up" — that is a good sign. High-quality down has an exceptional ability to quickly regain its volume. If the duvet remains flat or slowly regains its shape after being squeezed — the down quality is low.
Check the certifications
High-quality down duvets often carry Responsible Down Standard (RDS) or OEKO-TEX® certifications. These certifications guarantee both the down quality and ethical production standards.
Is a down duvet always better than a synthetic one
Not always. A genuine down duvet is best if lightness, longevity and natural warmth are important to you. But it is not suitable for:
- Allergy sufferers who react to materials of animal origin
- People whose duvet frequently becomes damp — down and moisture do not mix well
- Those who do not want complicated care — a down duvet requires specialist cleaning
